Famous people who don’t believe in evolution
According to a May 2007 Gallup poll, 49% of Americans believe in evolution, 48% do not and 2% have no opinion. Still, I find it startling every time I hear about another person who doesn’t. Evidently I’m wrestling with my own issues of mulish blockheadedness. Anyway, although hearing about ordinary people who don’t believe in evolution makes me die inside, finding out about famous people who don’t believe in evolution is entertaining. So let’s start a list.

Hmm. I guess that fame does not necessarily come with sense. Most of the people you have listed I don’t particularly respect for other reasons (just how sane can Mel Gibson be?) By the way, I love that Coulter is described as a maniac, rather than a pundit.
Anyway, I am so much more concerned about people I know and like and generally respect who do not believe in evolution – particularly when they are professional colleagues of mine who affect the minds of children. Then it’s downright scary.

At least tell the truth. According to Gallup 14% believe in godless evolution, 36% believe in God-directed evolution and 44% believe that God created man as he is today. The 14% who believe in Godless evolution reject the 36% who are thiestic evolutionists. to see this for yourself go to http://www.gallup.com/poll/21814/Evolution-Creationism-Intelligent-Design.aspx

Dr. Flanders,
Thanks for the link to that much more comprehensive breakdown of American beliefs. But note that most of the data reported at that site came from a later Gallup poll than the one I cited—I don’t appreciate being accused of “not telling the truth.” (Besides, it shows the same outcomes.)
And your interpretation of the results are flawed. The 14% of people who accept the non-theistic view of evolution aren’t rejecting anybody. The survey asked people to choose which statements they most agree with. There’s no measurement of people getting rejected.

If Gibson is pro-creation, then what did he mean on his commentary track for “Apocolypto” when he said, “The tapir looks like a pig, but is actually closer to the horse”. Was that just cultural force of habit, an observation on appearance, or a descriptoin of how the similar mammals branched off according to evolution?

Beats me what he meant.
On that note, I would really, really like to get a hold of the July 1995 Playboy so I can scan the article and post a link to his actual anti-evolution comments. I have not come across any old Playboys but I keep my eye out at yard sales.
