More conservatives on evolution

After the May 5 debate in which three Republican presidential candidates indicated that they do not believe in evolution, I was pointed to this post at Hullabaloo that excerpts quotations from several well-known intellectual conservatives about their stance on evolution. The quotes, some of which demonstrate a level of equivocation that I choose to find heartening, rather than frustrating, were originally published in a New Republic article by Ben Adler.

  1. AS Says:

Well, calling some of them “intellectual” may be a bit charitable…It just seems so dishonest to try and “thread the wingnut” as Digby says just because in some quarters support for Intelligent Design is a litmus test for whether or not you’re a true conservative. Evolutionary scientists shouldn’t let that kind of double-talk stand. If the educated conservatives who purport to speak for the movement can be forced to come clean about what they really believe, it will put the lie to the claim that “intelligent design” is an intellectually sustainable belief.
